Thermal Damage to Hair Follicles

The heat generated by the diode laser damages the hair follicle and the surrounding tissue, impairing the follicle’s ability to grow hair in the future. The heat effectively destroys or weakens the follicle so that it can no longer produce new, healthy hair.

Selective Photothermolysis

The process of using specific light wavelengths to target a particular structure (like the hair follicle) is called selective photothermolysis. This principle ensures that the laser targets hair follicles while minimizing damage to the surrounding skin.

Light Absorption by Melanin

The diode laser emits light at a specific wavelength (usually around 800nm to 810nm), which is absorbed by melanin, the pigment found in hair. Darker hair contains more melanin, which absorbs the laser light more efficiently. The light from the diode laser is attracted to the melanin in the hair, especially in the anagen phase (the active growth phase of the hair cycle), where the hair has the most melanin.
